The First GEAR Retreat and Junior Retreat (July 23 - August 10, 2012)

The Junior Retreat (July 23-August 3, 2012) for graduate students and postdocs featured mini-courses, problem sessions, short research talks, and activities designed to promote interaction. The Retreat (August 6-10, 2012) included survey talks, research talks, and forums for discussion. Both Retreats were structured around five themes:
- Higgs Bundles
- Geometric Structures and Teichmüller Spaces
- Dynamics on Moduli Spaces
- Special Representations
- Hyperbolic 3-manifolds
The forums for discussion included:
- An Everything You Want To Know (EYWTK) session. Intended as a swap meet of mathematical tools and perspectives, participants were invited to pose questions for experts in areas outside their own research specialties.
- Panel Discussion: Making the Most of the GEAR Network. The topic for the panel discussion was (a) the mathematical agenda for the GEAR Network the next two years and (b) how to make best use of the available resources of the network.
